UK poised to become Europe broadband leader

30/12/2005 - 08:22:52
The UK will have the largest broadband internet take-up in Europe by New Year’s Day, it emerged today.

Industry analysts Point Topic predict there will be 9.8 million broadband lines in the UK by Sunday, while the current leader, France, will have 9.7 million.

However, the study suggests a slowdown in the UK market since its “best ever” first quarter this year when just over a million new lines were set up. The second quarter’s new lines fell to below 860,000 and it estimates the final quarter will be around 940,000.

Germany has the third most broadband lines in Europe with 8.4 million. The United States is the largest market in the world with more than 40.9 million lines.
