Action needed to help poorer youths quit smoking
22/12/2005 - 14:02:27The anti-smoking group ASH Ireland is calling for action to combat higher levels of smoking among disadvantaged youths.
An EU study has found that socially disadvantaged adolescents with lower levels of education are significantly more likely to smoke, mainly due to a lack of knowledge about health risks.
ASH spokesman Professor Luke Clancy said: "What you need are incentives to show people that this is bad for them.
"Not only is it bad for them, but it is compounding their impoverishment and it's compounding their disadvantage and they're being trapped and ensnared by a vicious industry which doesn't care about anything except money."
