Govt planning measures to improve building standards

The Government is publishing new legislation today aimed at improving standards in the construction industry.

The Building Control Bill is designed to regulate and register professionals like architects and quantity surveyors and end a loophole that allows unqualified people to set themselves up in these professions.

It is also designed to promote energy-efficient building practices, stricter fire-prevention controls and better provisions for people with disabilities.

Environment Minister Dick Roche has said the legislation will be seen in years to come as a landmark in consumer law.
