Kubica joins BMW-Sauber

The new BMW-Sauber team have completed their line-up for next season by recruiting Robert Kubica as their tester.

Kubica, the reigning Renault World Series champion, will become the first Pole to make it to Formula One when he carries out Friday testing duties in 2006.

The 21-year-old, who recently enjoyed a one-off test with Renault, has signed a one-year contract with an option for an extension.

BMW is believed to be keen on grooming a young driver to step in to replace Jacques Villeneuve at the end of next season, having failed to find a way to oust the Canadian before his contract expires.

Kubica said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for me. I’m going to prove that I have earned it.

“For a young driver like me the three-car rule is a Godsend. In the past, test and replacement drivers were only sent out on test tracks, but I will get to know all 19 grand prix circuits and the ins and outs of a weekend.

“I would like to thank everybody who has helped me along the way over the last few years. Without these people I would not now be looking to a Formula One involvement.”

BMW initially offered the position to Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon, but without the guarantee of a race drive in 2007, the Englishman turned it down.

BMW motorsport boss Mario Theissen is convinced Kubica has the potential to earn a race seat.

He said: “We have been following Robert’s progress and are very impressed by his performance in recent years. He has worked hard to achieve his success without major support.

“We are convinced that he has the potential and the will to make the leap into Formula One and are delighted to be able to give him the opportunity to do so.

“As the number-three driver he will gain experience while at the same time helping the team develop the car.”
