Cahill embarrassed by Everton form
Tim Cahill has admitted that Everton’s disappointing season is becoming an “embarrassment”.
David Moyes’ men have just suffered their worst home defeat for 12 years, a 4-0 humiliation by Bolton on Saturday which followed hot on the heels of last Wednesday’s 2-1 home defeat by West Ham.
And although the Blues qualified for the Champions League for the first time earlier this year, their overall performance in a near 12-month period shows them with just 14 victories in all competitions and only 11 wins in 35 league matches.
Now Everton’s stars accept that the tide has to turn over the holiday period or they will be facing a relegation battle in 2006.
Cahill, who returned against Bolton after a three-match suspension, admitted that the Blues’ poor form is getting to the players.
“We are embarrassing ourselves,” said the Aussie midfielder.
Cahill concedes that the current run has left him suffering mental more than physical damage.
He said: “I’m feeling all right physically but I feel a bit battered (mentally). I have got a week to get over it and we will see what happens.”
Everton now have games away to Aston Villa on St Stephen's Day evening and a home clash with Liverpool two days later, before embarking on a new year programme of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on December 31 and a home game with Charlton two days later.
It is a spell that Everton know must see them reversing an increasingly worrying trend.
Over the last 12 months Everton have won only 14 of 45 games, losing 24, while in the Premiership they have won just 11 of 35 and lost 19.
That is relegation form, and Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta said: “We have to try to think why we are doing badly. We are not scoring and we make so many mistakes. It’s unbelievable and playing at home you feel even more disappointed.
“Now we have so many games coming up that are really important to us. We must be up for the next games and we must improve our performances.”
Cahill conceded: “When you make mistakes in this league you are going to lose games. But the biggest thing is the disappointment when you have worked so hard.”
