Irish households becoming more energy-efficient

Irish households are becoming more energy-efficient, according to the Government body that promotes and develops sustainable energy.

In a report published today, Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) said energy use had grown by 32% between 1990 and 2004.

However, it said the total number of dwellings in the country increased by 43% over the same period, meaning the average household's energy usage fell by 7.7%.

SEI said a range of factors had contributed to the fall, including more efficient heating systems and changes in building regulations.
