Equality body says carers face widespread discrimination

19/12/2005 - 10:47:37
The Equality Authority has called for government measures to alleviate the plight of carers, who it says face widespread discrimination in Irish society.

In a report due out today, the authority says carers do not receive enough official support and experience exclusion and inequality as a result.

It says the 150,000 people who look after friends or relatives are discriminated against in terms of access to jobs, income, education, health and accommodation.

The authority has advised the Government to take a number of measures to address the situation, including providing carers with adequate financial supports and developing a greater role for the State in relation to the provision of care services.
