BSkyB passes subscriber milestone
Pay-TV company BSkyB celebrated a major landmark today after passing the barrier for eight million subscribers – almost one in three households.
The company had set the figure as a target for it to achieve by the end of this year.
Sky now has its sights on 10 million direct-to-home subscribers by 2010 with 25% using Sky Plus, the service which allows viewers to pause live TV and record one satellite programme while watching another.
It is also hoping for 30% penetration of customers with a multiroom package - where different programmes can be viewed in different parts of the home.
Sky’s chief executive James Murdoch said: “Sky is achieving strong growth. We are especially well placed to broaden Sky’s appeal as entertainment and communications come together.”
Last month Sky revealed that a price hike in subscriptions led to churn – the percentage of subscribers that leave the firm each year – rising further away from its goal of 10% between July and September. Overall subscriptions still grew however.
