HSE boss defends controversial PPARS computer system
15/12/2005 - 12:54:53The chief executive of the Health Service Executive has defended the controversial PPARS computer system that was the subject of a highly critical report from the Comptroller and Auditor General this week.
The Government's spending watchdog said the project, which was suspended earlier this year, ended up costing €131m due to poor management and the inappropriate use of external consultants.
However, Professor Brendan Drumm told the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee today that the system had actually been successful in the areas where it had been implemented.
"It has introduced standardisation to a fragmented environment," he said. "It is also bringing to the surface HR management issues that prior to its implementation remained undetected across the system."
