Harney refuses to make exception for Dáil protestor

15/12/2005 - 11:49:59
The Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney has said the Government will not allow protestor Marie Therese O'Loughlin, who alleges abuse in a private care home, to have her case heard by the Residential Institutions Redress Board.

Ms O'Loughlin has been protesting outside the Dáil for the past four months seeking to have her case heard by the board.

She says she was abused as a child in a private care home and wants her case heard by the Redress Board.

However, the board's remit only covers abuse that happened in state-owned institutions.

Pressed about the matter in the Dáil today, Ms Harney said the Government would not be making any exceptions.

"We can't make exceptions for individuals, hard and all as it may seem to be," she said.
