Greens seek consensus on energy policy

The Green Party has called on all of Ireland's political parties to adopt a unified approach to Ireland's long-term energy needs.

The party made the call at the official launch of its energy policy today.

The policy includes a major reduction in Ireland's fossil-fuel dependency and an accelerated switch to renewable energy sources.

Green Party spokesman Eamon Ryan said that politicians have a habit of rarely looking beyond the next election, but that a long-term approach is needed in the area of energy.

He said that countries like Denmark had got around the problem by securing cross-party agreement on long-term energy goals.
