Greens in plea over energy policy

15/12/2005 - 06:51:16
Ireland needs to undertake a radical shift in energy policy towards renewable sources of power, the Green Party has demanded.

The party is unveiling its new energy policy at a meeting chaired by leader Trevor Sargent and attended by energy spokesman Eamon Ryan and councillors Mary White and David Healy.

Mr Ryan said 90% of the country’s energy was currently sourced from fossil fuels.

“The Green Party is seeking to create a radical shift in our energy policy to bring us into a new renewable energies future.

“We use energy in three main ways: heating, power generation and transport.

“We believe that dramatic energy efficiencies can be gained in all three areas and that our own renewable supply will provide a clean and secure alternative energy source to fossil fuels,” he said.
