Govt ‘must learn from British speed cameras experience’
The AA has said the Government must learn from the British experience before expanding the network of speed cameras on Ireland's roads.
The British authorities are currently introducing new measures that are expected to reduce the number of speed cameras being erected in the future.
Motoring groups had complained that the cameras were being used to make profits for local authorities rather than to improve road safety.
The Irish Government is currently planning to introduce more speed cameras and AA spokesman Conor Faughnan said today that the British experience must not be replicated.
"If we're putting them at accident black-spots and if we're signposting them well, then I think they can do a good job," he said.
"If we duplicate the mistakes made in the UK, then I think we'll wind up with serious opposition to cameras here."
