Cruise drums up cash for Scientology project
15/12/2005 - 11:42:37Tom Cruise invited people to a rare personal appearance in the Big Apple, for a fund-raiser for a controversial Scientology project.
Cruise is raising money for a scheme called the New York Rescue Workers’ Detoxification Project. The idea is using saunas, vitamins and other natural treatments to heal emergency workers whose health suffered due to working at Ground Zero after September 11.
Tickets started at around €4,400 for a picture with Cruise and dinner. But the scheme has its critics.
Rick Ross, who covers Scientology on his cultnews.com website, said there was no scientific basis for the recovery regime.
“It’s not about what can be proven, it’s about what Tom Cruise believes,” he said.
