UK govt in BT contract pledge to jobless, pensioners

The British government’s biggest department today pledged to improve services to the unemployed, pensioners and those claiming benefits under an £850m (€1.25bn) contract with telecoms giant BT to improve communications.

The Department for Work and Pensions said the deal will provide a modernised communications network to enable its service to be more reliable and better performing.

Leigh Lewis, Permanent Secretary at the department, said of the contract: “It paves the way for the department to receive the most modern communications infrastructure in the country, enabling us to meet increased demand on communications as we become a more customer focused organisation.”

BT said the department will be able to offer a more reliable, faster service to millions of people.
