SIPTU and Irish Ferries to resume talks today

06/12/2005 - 07:42:30
Both sides in the Irish Ferries dispute are due to resume talks today in an effort to resolve the bitter row over the company's controversial "outsourcing" plan.

The talks began yesterday under the auspices of the Labour Relations Commission, following an intervention from the body set up to oversee compliance with social partnership.

The National Implementation Body has put forward proposals that are believed to include a commitment that Irish Ferries will honour Irish labour law and pay all its workers at least the minimum wage.

However, the proposals are also believed to allow the company to re-register its vessels in another country.

Reports this morning said this was putting the talks under threat as SIPTU believed the only way to get Irish Ferries to honour Irish labour laws was to prevent it from re-flagging its ships.
