Shearer in the clear

29/11/2005 - 13:50:53
Newcastle captain Alan Shearer will not be charged by the Football Association over his clash with Everton’s David Weir.

The FA today confirmed they cannot take the matter further after match referee Howard Webb confirmed he had seen the incident in which the 35-year-old striker appeared to catch the defender with his elbow as the two men jumped for a high ball, and dealt with it.

“Howard Webb has confirmed to us that he saw the incident at the time,” said the FA’s director of communications, Adrian Bevington. “Therefore, that prevents us from taking any other action under FIFA regulations.

“The matter is now closed.”
