O'Leary fined over referee comments

28/11/2005 - 15:45:29
Aston Villa manager David O’Leary has been fined £5,000 (€7,286) and warned to his future conduct by a Football Association disciplinary commission following his criticism of referee Graham Poll last month.

O’Leary went onto the pitch at St Andrews to gesture in celebration towards Villa chairman Doug Ellis after his side had defeated Birmingham 1-0 in their local derby.

It was his remarks towards Poll following his clenched fist salute in the direction of the directors’ box that landed O’Leary in hot water.

The former Leeds boss admitted a charge of abusive and/or insulting words towards Poll. O’Leary had already been reminded of his responsibilities in relation to his post-match celebrations.
