Souness leaves out Owen
Everton had midfielder Tim Cahill restored to their side for the first time since he helped Australia reach the World Cup finals for the Premiership clash with Newcastle at Goodison Park.
Cahill had been ruled out of last weekend’s dreadful defeat at West Brom by a groin strain suffered while on international duty.
James McFadden also got a place in the starting line-up having been a substitute at The Hawthorns, and Everton relegated Kevin Kilbane and Marcus Bent to the bench.
Newcastle had Alan Shearer back after hernia surgery but Michael Owen was denied his first return to Merseyside since his move from Real Madrid back to the Premiership.
He had not recovered from a groin problem and failed even to make the bench despite confident predictions that he would be in the squad.
Otherwise boss Graeme Souness fielded the side that lost at Chelsea last time out.
