Agreement sees Gaza-Egypt border crossing open
26/11/2005 - 08:32:41The main border from Southern Gaza into Egypt is to open today, following a deal brokered between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
The control of the Rafa Crossing is being transferred to the Palestinians for the first time in nearly 40 years, in a move that President Mahmoud Abbas has described as being important.
Dozens of monitors from the EU will remain in the region for 12 months and will have the final say on who is allowed in and out of the territory.
The border will only open four hours a day at first, but officials say it will eventually be open 24 hours a day.
