Row over 'on-the-runs' in the North deepens

The bitter political row between Sinn Féin and the SDLP over British proposals dealing with the so-called "On The Runs" has deepened after renewed criticism from Martin McGuinness.

He accused the SDLP leader, Mark Durkan, of scoring cheap political points for the latter’s attack on Sinn Féin.

Mr Durkan said that Sinn Féin had “opened the door” for former British soldiers, who are now fugitives, to be exonerated for crimes, with their demands for an amnesty for other fugitives.

But Mr McGuiness said that Sinn Féin did not propose, suggest discuss or accept that British forces should be included in the deal, because he said that at the height of the Troubles, Sinn Féin members were the primary target of British soldiers.
