Whitehead set for long-term deal

25/11/2005 - 14:31:37
Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead is close to signing a new deal which will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2010.

The 23-year-old, one of the successes of the Black Cats’ difficult start to life back in the Barclays Premiership, is in the final stages of agreeing a two-year extension to his existing contract.

Whitehead arrived on Wearside from Oxford in the summer of 2004 in a £325,000 (€475,400) move on a three-year deal and after impressing in the Coca-Cola Championship last season – when he was voted Player of the Year by his team-mates – was handed a 12-month extension in the summer.

Offers were made for Whitehead – along with Julio Arca and Stephen Elliott - during the close-season, which has prompted the club to tie up his future.
