SDLP calls on Sinn Féin to abandon OTR demands

25/11/2005 - 08:18:45
The SDLP has called on Sinn Féin to abandon its demand for paramilitary fugitives to be allowed return to the North without fear of imprisonment.

The British parliament approved the move in the face of widespread opposition this week following years of lobbying from the republican movement.

However, Sinn Féin has criticised the fact that the new law also covers police and soldiers who colluded with loyalist paramilitaries.

The SDLP has been attacking Sinn Féin as a result of this, claiming it has sold out the victims of collusion for its own gain.

It is now calling on Sinn Féin to abandon its support for the so-called "on-the-runs" legislation.

Party leader Mark Durkan said Sinn Féin should join all the other parties in the North in asking the British government to withdraw the new law.
