Govt accused of ignoring domestic violence victims

25/11/2005 - 08:25:23
Women's Aid has accused the Government of turning a blind eye to the victims of domestic violence.

The organisation claims one-fifth of Irish women suffer some form of abuse at the hands of their partners, but thousands of victims cannot be reached due to a lack of services.

It said its refuge centres were being forced to turn away hundreds of people because they are overflowing and do not have the services to help many victims of abuse.

Women's Aid is due to march on the Dáil today to highlight the issue as part of International Day Against Violence Against Women.
