Loane directs top Irish film

Terry Loane’s hilarious Mickybo & Me (Universal, €24.99) is a wonderful Irish film, my top one of the year.

Niall Wright and John-Jo McNeil play two youngsters, Jonjo and Mickbo, both from opposite ends of the religious divide in 1970s Belfast. As Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid they somehow plan to reach the promised land far from the North — Australia no less.

Naivety, childish escapism, a wonderful script and a dash of great acting (Julie Walters, Adrian Dunbar and Ciaran Hinds also star), make this a delight to watch.
