Postal strike cancelled after Labour Court proposals

23/11/2005 - 07:33:20
The threat of pre-Christmas strike action at An Post has been lifted following new recommendations from the Labour Court yesterday.

The Communications Workers Union immediately cancelled its planned strike at the company after the court recommend that postal workers be granted outstanding pay increases.

The CWU had arranged the industrial action in pursuit of pay rises due under the Sustaining Progress agreement.

An earlier Labour Court ruling said the increases should be linked to reform of work practices.

However, the union refused to accept this on the grounds that the pay aspects of Sustaining Progress were designed to offset the rising cost of living and were supposed to be unrelated to productivity.

The court has now attached no conditions to the payment of the increases, prompting the CWU to recommend acceptance of the proposals when they are put to a ballot of its members.

An Post, meanwhile, said it would consider the cost implications of the recommendations at a board meeting tomorrow.
