Dáil to hear Lawlor tributes
The Dáil will today hear tributes to the controversial former Government TD, Liam Lawlor.
Mr Lawlor, who was jailed three times for failing to co-operate with the Flood Planning Tribunal in 2001 and 2002, was killed in a car accident in Moscow last month.
Some newspapers reported incorrectly that a female Ukranian interpreter injured in the incident was a prostitute, and were later forced to apologise to the Lawlor family.
Messages of sympathy by TDs will today be read into the Dáil record during the Order of Business.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will lead the tributes, followed by Opposition party leaders.
Mr Lawlor’s son, Niall told his father’s funeral Mass in Lucan last month that sections of the media had turned Mr Lawlor into a figure of hate with their cruel and vicious treatment of him.
He added that the former Dublin West TD was a loving family man against whom no court or tribunal had made any adverse findings up to his death.
