Ahern: Penalty points scheme has saved lives

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has defended the penalty points scheme introduced for motorists three years ago.

Critics of the scheme say it does not cover enough offences and has largely failed in its primary aim of reducing the level of deaths on Irish roads.

However, Mr Ahern told the Dáil today that the Government was planning to expand the initiative to cover a range of new offences.

He also said he believed penalty points had actually saved many lives.
