Unionists slam planned reform of North bureaucracy
22/11/2005 - 13:58:02Unionists have slammed the local government reforms announced for the North today, claiming they are designed solely as a concession to Sinn Féin.
Northern Secretary Peter Hain announced a reduction in the number of district councils from 26 to seven, as well as a major streamlining of health and education agencies.
The move is designed to reduce bureaucracy and save up to £200m (€292m) annually.
However, unionists claim it will lead to "Balkanisation" and wider divisions between the two communities in the North.
Sinn Féin has rejected the claim and is insisting the reforms will lead to improved public services.
