One-quarter of DPP files rejected due to lack of evidence
22/11/2005 - 07:52:41More than one-quarter of all criminal files sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions are rejected due to insufficient evidence, according to the DPP's annual report for last year.
The report says 60% of files forwarded by investigating gardaí led to a prosecution in 2004.
The majority of the 40% that didn't were deemed to contain insufficient evidence, while the remaining cases were dropped for other reasons including the expiry of the time limit or sympathetic grounds.
The DPP report also shows that 95% of prosecutions result in a conviction, 90% of them following a guilty plea and the other 5% as a result of a jury trial.
