Greens seek budget measures to make society fairer
The Green Party has called on the Government to take a range of measures in next month's budget to make Irish society fairer.
An increase in child support payments, an end to the means test for carers and an overhaul of the tax system are all included in the party's pre-budget submission.
Launching the document today, party leader Trevor Sargent said the issue of childcare also needed to be addressed.
"What we want to do is give people choice, give people money so that they can afford to spend more time at home with their children and can also afford to work," he said.
"At the moment, the Government doesn't see this as a choice. They’re just trying to force more and more people into the workplace.
"The congestion that is causing on the roads and the difficulties it is causing for communities where parents are not at home is a problem that is being stored up for the future."
