Irish shoppers to spend 8% more on Christmas gifts

22/11/2005 - 11:04:09
A leading international consultancy firm has claimed Irish shoppers are planning to spend 8% more on Christmas gifts this year than they did in 2004.

According to Deloitte, 84% of Irish respondents to a survey it carried out in nine European countries said they were planning to spend as much if not more than they did last year.

The main reasons given were improved income and a more interesting range of presents to choose from.

Deloitte said the Irish results were at odds with much of the rest of Europe, where people are planning to spend between 5% and 9% less this Christmas.

It said they survey found that Irish people were significantly more optimistic about their personal financial situations than their European neighbours.
