Hundreds queue for US launch of Xbox 360
The long-awaited Xbox 360 was launched in the US today, with hundreds queuing up from midnight to get their hands on the new games console.
The next-generation Microsoft system is extremely powerful and has high-definition graphics. It can also play music, display photos and show DVDs.
It marks Microsoft’s assault on the lucrative gaming industry traditionally dominated by Nintendo and Sony.
The launch is part of a strategy that will eventually tie in elements of Microsoft’s online initiative, called Windows Live.
“In the living room itself, Xbox 360 is our centrepiece and a product that redefines what goes on there," said company chairman Bill Gates.
Microsoft has announced an ambitious plan to launch the console worldwide within a few weeks.
There are two versions of the Xbox 360, a basic system, which costs $299 (€254.50), and a deluxe model for $399 (€339.70), which comes with a detachable hard drive and can play older Xbox games.
Peter Gonzalez from New York was one of the first to get his hands on the new toy, having queued for more than 28 hours in the rain.
“I feel amazing,” the 19-year-old said. “It’s going to be worth it.”
Several electronics chains opened especially for midnight launch events.
At a 24-hour Wal-Mart in Virginia the queue had exceeded stocks by 10am on Monday.
Wal-Mart online and Amazon reported having already sold out.
The Xbox 360 is due to be launched in Europe on December 2.
