A post-mortem is due to be carried out in Limerick today on the body of a man found in the River Shannon at the weekend.

The body of the man in his early 20's was spotted by passers-by at Howley’s Quay in the city centre on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood that the dead man, from Co Limerick, had gone into the city for a night out friends on Friday and was last seen when he went to buy food.

Gardaí said today that they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the man whose body was found submerged in relatively shallow water.

They were also examining CCTV footage which placed the young man in a city centre fast-food outlet in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A garda spokesman confirmed that the State Pathologist had been notified and a post-mortem is due to be carried out today at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital to establish the cause of death.

It is understood that the victim had some marks on his head which may have given rise to concern over the exact circumstances of his death.
