Greens' ice globe highlights climate change

21/11/2005 - 14:55:21
A melting ice sculpture of the globe was unveiled today to highlight the damage caused to the environment by greenhouse gasses.

The Green Party also used the four-foot structure to announce details of a major seminar on climate change in Dublin’s Mansion House next month.

The Civic Forum is timed to coincide with negotiations at the UN Conference on Climate Change in Montreal.

Greens environment spokesperson Ciaran Cuffe said: “We hope that the Civic Forum will explain the science of climate change, the likely impacts both here and abroad, the solutions we can turn to and the market mechanisms and international agreements that might deliver these solutions.

“Because our response to climate change will have to be delivered over the lifetime of several future governments, we need to get agreement on our approach to the issue on a cross-party partnership basis.”

Greens energy spokesman Eamon Ryan said of the Montreal conference: “We believe that the Irish people want to play their part in tackling the problem and in ensuring that the negotiations lead to inclusive and just solutions to the unprecedented challenge we face.”

Speakers at the Civic Forum event on December 5, which is being chaired by broadcaster Olivia O’Leary include Maynooth NUI lecturer in climatology, Dr John Sweeney, EPA director general Mary Kelly, Airtricity chief executive Eddie O’Connor and Ibec economist Daniel McCoy.
