Cork City 2 Derry City 0

Cork City thrilled a packed Turner’s Cross to lift the eircom League title to put them into the Champions League for the first time and on course for the double.

Cork were on top of a somewhat nervous Derry from the start and deserved their 18th minute lead.

Having headed just over from Liam Kearney’s cross inside the opening minute, John O’Flynn, passed fit just before the game, made no mistake when glancing a header from Roy O’Donovan’s cross past David Forde for the opening goal.

Cork remained on top with Denis Behan, an early replacement for Neale Fenn, and O’Donovan coming close to increasing their lead before the break.

The clinching goal arrived on 61 minutes. O’Donovan was again involved as he picked out Kearney whose low drive arrowed into the net past David Forde. Forde then had to make the save of the night to deprive O’Donovan a third late on.
