Govt to set up rapid-response unit of aid volunteers

The Government has announced plans to establish a special corps of volunteers that will be available to travel to disaster sites across the world at short notice.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern said the rapid-response unit would be made up of people with specialist skills needed in times of humanitarian crises.

He said all such individuals in the State would be asked to join the new volunteer corps.
