Sharon consults Likud Party on elections

16/11/2005 - 12:50:21
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon consulted members of his Likud Party today about the possibility of holding an early election, and his foreign minister said Sharon was ready to set a date for March.

Early elections became an issue after the Laboyr Party, Sharon’s junior coalition partner, chose a new leader who said he would pull Labour out of the government.

The new Labour leader, former union boss Amir Peretz, is to meet with Sharon tomorrow to discuss a date for elections.

Without Labour, Sharon would not have the necessary majority in parliament.

Elections are currently scheduled for November 2006 but Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, a powerful player in Likud, said the prime minister was ready to agree to early elections.

Shalom said he met with the prime minister several days ago. “We discussed it (elections) and we reached a conclusion that if Amir Peretz wants elections, then he will get elections. There is no reason to delay it. March is the right month,” Shalom told Israel Radio.
