Man quizzed over pensioner's death
A man in his 20s was being questioned tonight about the death of an elderly pensioner in Sligo.
Edward Fitzmaurice, 83, was left gagged and bound in his home in Bellaghy, near Charlestown in 1998 after a robbery. He died from hypothermia and his body was found by a neighbour five days later.
A Garda spokeswoman said a man in his 20s had been arrested in Cork in connection with the death.
The man is being held in Togher Garda Station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
Mr Fitzmaurice lived above his drapery shop and was last seen alive on May 1 1998 by two local women who had gone to buy pillowcases.
After the intruders left, he managed to make his way from the bedroom and across the hallway to a bedroom at the front of the house, but was unable to summon help.
The long-running investigation into his death was revived by gardaí this year with a new public appeal.
Last month, seven men were arrested as part of the investigation but were later released without charge.
