Google recruiting for new UK base
Google officially opened its new UK headquarters today as its operations in Europe continue to expand.
The internet giant plans to develop wireless capabilities from the London base.
It is recruiting engineering, sales and other staff to join its existing 180 employees at the headquarters.
Omid Kordestani, the company’s senior vice-president, said more than 50% of Google traffic came from outside the US.
“Our hope is that by having local engineers they will develop local products. We hope that wireless innovation can happen more rapidly out of London,” he said.
Google’s launched its first UK base in London’s Soho four years ago.
The search engine was developed by students Larry Page and Sergey Brin from their dorm room at Stanford University, California, seven years ago.
Its technology is licensed to more than 100 companies and the firm also has a news site and shopping service known as Froogle.
