McDowell: Extra funds may be available for Gardaí

15/11/2005 - 15:54:29
The Minister for Justice Michael McDowell hinted this afternoon that extra resources could be made available for the Gardaí.

The Book of Estimates, which is due to be published this week, is likely to contain additional provisions for the force.

Minister McDowell remained tight-lipped this afternoon about whether more gardaí in addition to the 2,000 currently being recruited would be taken on.

“I hear people saying now ‘what about the 2,000 extra gardaí?’”, he said.

“They are being recruited, and the number of gardaí in service since I've become minister has shot up.

“If you look forward to the estimates process which will commence later this week, the public will see what priority the Government attaches to strengthening the Garda Siochana.”
