Councillors reject huge sewage plant in north Dublin

15/11/2005 - 07:52:08
Fingal County Council has rejected plans to build a €140m sewage treatment plant on the picturesque Portrane peninsula in north Co Dublin.

The proposed plant would have catered for 850,000 people, the overwhelming majority of them from outside the Fingal area.

Around 2,500 objections were lodged against the facility, and local residents also staged a protest outside last night's council meeting while a decision was being taken.

Reports this morning said the move had put the sewage strategy for the entire Dublin region at risk, as the treatment plant was an integral part of the strategy for the years up to 2031.
