RPII says public is too complacent about radon gas
14/11/2005 - 07:57:32The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland has expressed concern about public complacency in relation to radon gas.
The colourless, odourless gas seeps up through the ground in certain areas and can get trapped in buildings with poor ventilation.
It is blamed for 200 lung cancer deaths in Ireland every year, making it the second highest cause of the condition after smoking.
Despite this, the RPII has warned that the public does not take enough interest in the matter, particularly as radon levels are high in Ireland compared to other European countries.
