Engineers seek special court for infrastructure cases

The body representing Irish engineers has called for a special court to be established to deal with challenges to key infrastructure developments.

In its pre-budget submission, Engineers Ireland said a special division of the High Court should be established to hear such cases, with mandatory timescales to ensure important projects are not held up.

The body has also called on the Government to abandon its plans to introduce fixed-price contracts for infrastructure projects.

It said such contracts, which are designed to prevent budget overruns, were "untried and untested" and could lead to delays in major schemes.
