Not as easy as it looked - McCaw

12/11/2005 - 16:28:53
New Zealand captain Richie McCaw insisted his side were made to work hard by Ireland despite a 45-7 score which suggested a walk in the park for the All Blacks.

The tourists fielded an entirely different starting XV to that which hammered Wales in Cardiff last week but they were equally ruthless, wingers Sitiveni Sivivatu and Doug Howlett scoring two tries apiece in a Lansdowne Road rout.

However, McCaw felt the scoreline flattered his side and told BBC1: “It wasn’t easy out there.

“It was a tough battle and there was a lot of passion from both teams. Our team played pretty well, we put them under pressure and scored points when we needed to.

“The boys coming off feel like they’ve been in a game.”

The game also featured an horrific spear-tackle by Ma’a Nonu on Ireland’s Gordon D’Arcy, but McCaw was keen instead to focus on their next match against England at Twickenham as they go in search of a tour grand slam.

“We will rest up tonight and then focus on England,” he added.

“It’s going to be another tough one. It will be a big challenge, Twickenham always is, but we’re looking forward to it.”
