Mandaric: This job could kill me

11/11/2005 - 10:11:37
Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric fears stress will kill him unless he quits football but still plans to deliver a new stadium for the club.

The 64-year-ld has invested more than £25m (€37.1m) in seven years and is looking for an investor to buy him out by the summer of 2008.

Under the Serbian multi-millionaire, Pompey were promoted to the Premiership club.

But they have not enjoyed the best start to the season and are yet to win at home.

He admits the strain is getting to him.

Mandaric said: “I have worked so hard and I do not know how much longer I will be alive.

“A few more games like the Wigan one and a few more sleepless nights and they might not find me up the next day. I keep it inside me and I have to be the one supporting everyone and being calm.

“People do not want to see me unhappy and I do not think I will be involved in another club after Portsmouth.

“Some people ask me what there is in it for me. I have given my life to the club and I do not always get back the rewards.”

He added: “Before I leave I want to score the goal. That is the building of a new stadium and establishing Portsmouth in the Premier League. If I can do that and get us somewhere in mid-table I will have done my job.

“I imagine that will be in two or three years from now. I will be here next season and the season after that. I will have been at the club for nearly 10 years and maybe that will be the time to go.”
