New cancer strategy highly critical of current services

The Government's new cancer strategy is reportedly highly critical of the current quality of cancer services in Ireland.

Reports this morning said the strategy had highlighted inequity of access and a fragmentation of services across the country, as well as below-average survival rates among victims.

The reports said the document maintained that there was currently too may hospitals and consultants involved in the provision of cancer care.

It reportedly recommends that all services be streamlined into four networks each catering for a population of one million people.

This morning's reports said the strategy also calls for higher taxes on cigarettes and a ban on children using sunbeds.
