Latest Spielberg spectacular a let down
Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds (Paramount, 24.95) is high on special effects, and with Tom Cruise in the lead role of a father determined to save his family from a Martian invasion, the drama should have lived up to its class billing.
Spielberg's sci-fi version of H G Wells' classic, however, falls a mite short of what you'd come to expect from the maestro, a tad heavy on special effects if you ask me, and short on plot delivery.
This double disc release is, however, bursting with extra goodies, including several featurettes where Spielberg holds court on the making of the film, introduces Gene Barry and Ann Robinson (stars of the original version) who make cameo appearances, a look at the making of alien machines … you get the picture.
Incidentally, the original WOTW is also available from Paramount.
Sci-fi
Star rating: 3/5.
