Hawkins attacks Bono's ego

11/11/2005 - 12:09:01
The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins has slammed Irish rocker Bono for "fuelling his ego" by arranging an audience with late Pope John Paul II.

The I Believe In A Thing Called Love rocker can see no logical reason for the 2000 meeting between Bono and the head of the Catholic Church, because he believes the Pope was, by then, too senile to acknowledge the U2 star's presence.

Hawkins says: "I hate people being holier-than-thou. Like Bono getting an audience with the Pope. What's he going to say to him? 'I'm an Irish pop star, and you're the Pope!'

"And the Pope's going to say to him, 'Am I?' He was riddled with Alzheimer's Disease, it made no difference to him who was in the room, spouting rubbish. It was all for Bono's ego."
