Konchesky: Call-up has vindicated West Ham switch

08/11/2005 - 08:41:48
Paul Konchesky believes his England call has justified his decision to quit Charlton for West Ham.

The 24-year-old defender surprised many observers when he opted to move across London this summer to the newly-promoted Hammers.

But Alan Pardew’s men have exceeded expectations during the early part of the campaign, allowing Konchesky to enhance the impressive reputation he built up at The Valley.

With Ashley Cole and Jamie Carragher injured and Wayne Bridge not fit enough to complete a full 90 minutes, Sven-Goran Eriksson has called on Konchesky for Saturday’s friendly with Argentina.

And while the Barking-born player remains an outside bet to make Eriksson’s 23-man squad for next summer’s World Cup, just having the chance to add to his single cap proves he made the right choice in joining West Ham.

“Part of my decision to go to West Ham was because I knew I was going to play every week and England was in the back of my head,” he told Sky Sports News.

“It was a big thing for me to leave but it has paid off with the team going so well and the manager having faith in me.”
